Abstract

The condensed combustion products (CCPs) of aluminized propellants are critical to the energy performance, thermal ablation and combustion stability of solid rocket motor. In order to eliminate the effect of the gradual increasing quenching distance by retreat of propellant burning surface, a new collection system of CCPs based on constant quenching distance was designed and established. The collection method is verified through the collection and analysis of the condensed phase combustion products of typical AP/RDX/Al/HTPB propellant. Results show that constant quenching distance does affect the CCPs significantly, increasing the agglomeration content, reducing the amount of small oxide particles, and increasing the content of activated aluminum in the CCPs. The difference between particle size distribution and combustion efficiency verifies the necessity and rationality of the collection method. Based on the new collection method, it is found that increasing pressure in chamber can reduce degree of agglomeration and average particle size of the agglomerate. Average particle size of the CCPs decreased with the increase of pressure.
