Abstract

Compared to the labyrinth seal, the brush seal,as a novel seal method,is better than the labyrinth seal in terms of the sealing performance. However, the brush seal shows unsatisfactory sealing performance under the high-pressure difference working condition. In order to meet the sealing demands in aero-engines,the paper designed a hybrid brush-labyrinth seal to improve the brush seal performance. Both numerical simulation and experimental study on the brush seal and brush-labyrinth sealing performance showed that the leakage of brush-labyrinth seal decreased by 34.7% to 68.5% of the leakage of brush seal under the same working conditions, indicating a significant sealing performance improvement. The hybrid brush-labyrinth seal provides a new and low-cost method with a compact structure and low leakage for sealing demands in aero-engines.
