abstract = "The control method for tethered satellite deployment and retrieval is important to meet its operation requirement. In this paper, dynamics model for a short tethered satellite system is established. The deployment and retrieval method for the short tethered satellite in fast operation is discussed. The sub-satellite could be developed with an initial velocity and decelerates in the deployment and retrieval period. Thrusters are used to control the direction of the tether. Variable structure control scheme is designed based on the dynamic character of the system and the output of the thrusters. Numerical simulation is carried out to test the efficiency of the control method. The tension of the tether is positive in both the development and retrieval period because of the acceleration of the tether. The Variable structure control system can keep the sub-satellite in designed direction. This control method can provide an idea for future tethered satellite control.",
