N2 - Two-dimensional transition metal borides (MBenes) attract considerable research interest for their exceptional electrical conductivity, high mechanical strength, and excellent dynamic and thermodynamic stability. In recent years, significant efforts have been devoted to exploring MBenes, leading to an increasing number of synthesis methods. Nevertheless, research in this field remains at an early stage, with many fundamental questions and application potentials still unresolved. To bridge this gap, this review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in MBenes research. We begin with a comprehensive summary of recent advances in MBenes synthesis methodologies and subsequently focus on their promising potential in energy storage and conversion. Finally, we outline the key challenges and opportunities for future practical implementation, concluding with a forward-looking perspective that integrates current limitations, anticipated research directions, and application prospects.
