摘要

Manta rays usually swim near the seafloor and surface of the ocean, and how they can reach different depths in the sea has not been researched. This work calculates the cownose ray swimming toward various depths with the up-and-down asymmetrical flapping. Our results demonstrate that the different degrees of the asymmetrical flapping enable the manta ray to swim upward and downward, while also adjusting the gradient of the depth change through the asymmetry of the flapping pectoral fins. This study provides insights into how the bio-ray swims ascents and descents to various depths by the pectoral fins’ asymmetrical flapping.
