Abstract

The wear characteristics of Si3N4 under vapor phase lubrication of polyglycol and tricresyl phosphate are investigated in steel-on-Si3N4 system. The results show that polyglycol provides effective lubrication for the system, and the wear can be further reduced by adding a small amount of tricresyl phosphate. A film containing carbonaceous deposits, iron phosphate, nitrogen-containing compound and silicon oxide is formed on friction surface due to the oxidation of Si3N4.
