Abstract

In order to get surgical simulation with lower radiation, less cost and real time operation, a visualizing system for intra-operative simulation and post-operative facial appearance prediction of orthognathic surgery was developed. By acquiring radiographs of three orthogonal views and facial mesh data, using a specialized registration procedure, applying mesh deformation algorithm based on radial basis function interpolation, exploiting a novel mesh cutting algorithm based on prism, the system reconstructed the patient's skull, simulated complex osteotomies, aligned reconstructed skull and face, and finally predicted post-operative facial appearance of patient. The simulation result to a clinical patient shows that the proposed system can be an assist of orthognathic surgeon to make preoperative plan and execute intra-operative procedure.
