Abstract

Macrocycles composed of arylene and ethynylene units (AEMs) have attracted great interest in recent years, due to their novel properties and potential applications. The advances in syntheses of AEMs, including different cyclization methods, solid-phase synthesis, template synthesis and aggregation driven cyclization are summarized. The progress that has been achieved for self-assembly of AEMs and its applications in supramolecule chemistry, including three-dimensional nano-structures, discotic liquid crystals, extended tubular channels, guest-host complexes and porous organic solids, is also reviewed.
