Abstract

Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method, one of the latest and developing methods, is used for modeling metal cutting process in this paper. SPH is a powerful technique that can be efficient in handling problems of large deformation that are difficult to be tackled using traditional finite element methods. SPH method is used to investigate the effect of sequential cuts on the residual stresses in machined surface for AISI 316L steel. The simulation results show that residual stresses increase with of the following parameters increasing, including cutting speed and cutting depth. With sequential cuts, a slight drop was noticed in cutting force, while the thrust force in the first cutting was smaller than that in the second cutting, but the residual stresses will increase as the result of the accumulative effect.
