Abstract

Manufacturing faces challenges stemming from frequent design updates, shortened product life cycles, and increasingly diverse customer demands. Traditional assembly methods, such as those under the Toyota Production System (TPS), struggle to adapt to such dynamic conditions, leading to inefficiencies and delays. In response, the seru production system has emerged as a transformative alternative, emphasizing rapid responsiveness, flexibility, and worker autonomy. Unlike TPS, which prioritizes cost efficiency through mechanisms like kanban and heijunka, seru systems excel in reconfigurability and Just-In-Time Organization System (JIT-OS), making them well-suited to volatile market environments. This chapter introduces the seru production system, detailing its origins, typology, and evolution from divisional and rotating serus to single-operator yatais. It contrasts seru with TPS or lean, agile, and cellular manufacturing, highlighting its superior performance in reconfigurability, parallel operations, and cross-training of workers. Applications of seru systems are explored across industries such as electronics, automotive, and healthcare, demonstrating their versatility in both high- and low-variability environments. The chapter also identifies research opportunities in static and dynamic JIT-OS implementations, emphasizing the potential for integrated scheduling frameworks and adaptive algorithms. With rapid growth in scholarly interest and a burgeoning body of research, seru production systems represent a promising field of study. This tutorial serves as both an introduction and a comprehensive guide, aiming to advance understanding and inspire further innovation in this transformative production methodology.
