Abstract

The details on ceramic yield of silicon carbide fabricated by polymer impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP) were reviewed in this paper. The design, cross-linking and pyrolysis of pre-ceramic polymers as well as addition of active filler, all of which influence the ceramic yield, were analyzed. In order to obtain high ceramic yield, the basic way is designing preceramic polymers with active units such as Si-H, Si-CH=CH2, while optimizing the cross-linking and pyrolysis processes of precursor is also available. Adding active fillers is another effective route to improve ceramic yield and to achieve near net shape forming of materials. The development prospects were pointed out at last.
