Abstract

Development of burn-resistant titanium alloys is the most direct way to prevent titanium fire failure accidents. United States, Britain and Russia are all actively studying the mechanisms and engineered technologies of burn-resistant titanium alloys. The fundamental research of burn-resistant titanium alloys in China was started earlier, but had stagnated for many years in engineering technology development and applications, resulting in the wide gap compared with the developed countries. In the past five years, the engineered technology of Ti-V-Cr type burn-resistant titanium alloys has made significant progress with the efforts of materials producers and users. In this paper, the latest research progresses of engineered technology for the burn-resistant titanium alloys in China were reviewed, focusing on the developments of the large sized ingots, large sized bars, large sized slabs and ring forgings of Ti40 alloys and WSTi3515S alloys. The mechanical processing technologies and the burn-resistant performance evaluation methods of friction ignition in titanium alloys were introduced. In addition, the future development of burn-resistant titanium alloys was forecasted.
