Abstract

For computing the robust reliability index for the nonprobabilistic uncertain-but-bounded variables described by multi-ellipsoid convex set efficiently, the nonprobabilistic robust reliability index is first compared with the conventional probabilistic reliability index, and the identical properties between them are obtained. Second, the classical probability methods can be adopted to calculate the robust reliability index, and the uncertain-but-bounded variables are defined by a convex set. Based on the proposed principle, the nonprobabilistic robust reliability index for an inside flap of an aircraft in which all input uncertain-but-bounded variables are defined by multi-ellipsoid convex set is estimated by the classical probability techniques. The comparison of the robust reliability index between the traditional probabilistic reliability methods and the direct optimization technology is also given. The results show that the probabilistic reliability techniques can be used to calculate the robust reliability index for the case when all of the uncertain-but-bounded variables are formulated by a multi-ellipsoid convex set.
