Abstract
TiN/Ti composite film was prepared on TC17 titanium alloy substrate by ion-assisted-arc-deposition (IAAD) technique for improving fretting fatigue resistance of the titanium alloy at elevated temperature. The composition distribution, bonding strength, micro-hardness, ductility, the plain tribological properties and fretting fatigue resistance at elevated temperature of the film were investigated. The results indicated that with IAAD technique could prepare a TiN/Ti film with high hardness, good ductility, excellent bonding strength and high bearing load capability. The TiN/Ti composite films can improve the resistance of wear and fretting fatigue of the Ti alloy for its excellent tribological behaviors at 350 °C. However the fretting fatigue resistance of the titanium alloy after shot peening (SP) combined with IAAD TiN/Ti film post treatment was lower than that of IAAD TiN/Ti film or SP alone, because the compressive residual stress induced by SP was significantly relaxed and the film was easy to crack and break off.
