Abstract

The modified borate having particle size less than 0.5μm is synthesized as an oil additive. Its tribological properties are studied by using a four-ball tester. The results show that it has good extreme pressure, anti-wear and friction reduction properties. The viscosity of base oil and the water content in the modified borate have great effect on the wear resistance with extreme pressure. It can form a tribological mixed reaction-film on friction surface. Boron mainly exists in the form of boron nitride on friction surface, while nitrogen content is higher than sodium content.
