Investigation on ablation characteristics of C/C composites with ZrC/SiC coating

Abstract

A kind of anti-erosion ZrC/SiC coating for C/C composites was prepared by a two-step method of pack cementation and slurry. The ablation characteristics, phase composition and micro-structure of ZrC/SiC coating were studied by oxyacetylene flame test, XRD and SEM, respectively. The ablation mechanism of the coating was also investigated. It shows that the ZrC/SiC coating combines well with the substrate and has fine thermal-stability. The mass ablation rate of the ZrC/SiC coating is very low. The ablation mechanism of the coating is a synergistic effect of thermo-chemical ablation, thermo-physical ablation and mechanical erosion.
