Abstract
An in-situ AlN/Mg composite was synthesized by bubbling nitrogen gas into a molten Mg-Al alloy. The thermodynamic analyses of the nitridation reaction in the Mg-Al alloy melt show that AlN as a desirable reinforcement phase can be formed stably in the Mg-Al alloys. Then the higher ultimate tensile strengths (200–230 MPa) and the higher fracture elongations (16–47%) were obtained in the AlN/Mg-9Al permanent mold casting composites.
