Abstract

The ice resistance exerts a substantial influence on propulsion of polar ship, and decides the selection of main engine. Nevertheless, the majority of scholars focus their research on ice resistance of polar ships without propellers, neglecting the propeller influences. In this paper, a coupling method with Computational Fluid Dynamics and Discrete Element Method is employed to study resistance and propulsion of a polar ship in brash ice channel. The impact mechanisms on motion of brash ice, features of flow field and ice loads are discussed, and the resistance and propulsion performance are analyzed.
