Abstract

The friction and wear behaviors of zirconia toughened mullite ceramics against alumina were investigated under dry sliding from room temperature to 400°C. It was found that the wear rate of the ceramics decreases with the increase of temperature. The wear mechanism of the ceramics is micro-ploughing accompanied by micro cracking at room temperature. At elevated temperatures, the wear mechanism of the ceramic gradually changes into delamination and grain spalling because of the micro lubrication of the glass phase. The wear mechanism of alumina is brittle fracture and grain spalling.
