Abstract

In the introduction of the full paper, we point out what we believe to be the need for developing a suitable method of the calculation of the thermodynamic performance of TFE with PDCs in BD.12 PDCs with the inner diameter of 68 mm are assembled in the bypass duct of a traditional TFE as duct heater. There are two ways of exhaust: separate exhaust (SE) and mixed exhaust (ME). Section 2 presents the method of calculation we explored; although much of the mathematics looks familiar, the way of applying them in the TFE with PDCs is quite differenet from that of applying them in the traditional TFE; in particular, eq. (12) is the new result of our exploration. The calculated results, presented in Figs. 5 and 6, and their analysis indicate preliminarily that: (1) at the design point, compared with SE TFE, the specific thrust (Fs) of SE TFE with PDCs in BD (PS model) improves by 127.6%; (2) the Fs of ME TFE with PDCs in BD (PM model) improves by 74.6%; (3) the specific fuel consumption (sfc) is smaller than that of traditional TFE with afterburner; (4) at a certain flight altitude, the Fs of TFEs with PDCs in BD increases and their sfc decreases with increasing flight Mach number; (5) at the constant flight Mach number, with increasing flight altitude, the Fs of PS model decreases and its sfc increases; (6) the Fs of PM model increases tardily and its sfc decreases tardily; (7) the PS model displays obvious performance gain both at lower flight Mach number and at lower flight altitude; (8) the PM model can work in wider range of flight Mach number and altitude; it has potential and steady performance.
