Abstract

This paper presents a flutter control technique of an aeroelastic airfoil system undergoing incompressible flow using an enhanced dynamic vibration absorber (EDVA). The proposed EDVA is introduced by adding an actuator to control the mass of the classical mass-spring-damper system using feedback signals from the aeroelastic airfoil system states. The mathematical model of a typical two-degrees of freedom aeroelastic airfoil integrated with the EDVA is derived based on a modified unsteady aerodynamic theory. Additionally, the closed-loop system with two feedback controllers are presented and analyzed. The obtained results show that the flutter speed increases by introducing the passive dynamic absorber, while applying the active-mode of the EDVA at the new flutter speed, a full suppression of the airfoil’s plunge and pitch oscillations is obtained, consequently, the airfoil flutter boundaries are increased.
