Effects of roundness of hole on estimated fatigue life with given survivability

Abstract

Profile of real round hole was assumed as regular polygon and the tolerance of roundness of real round hole was expressed with the difference of radii between inscribed circle and circumscribed circle for the regular polygon. Finite element method was used to analyze the stress field around the hole with different tolerance of roundness. On the basis of calculation results, fatigue life of the hole was predicted with given survivability and the effect of roundness of the hole on fatigue life was discussed. Numerical results showed that on this assumed condition, the smaller the tolerance of roundness is, the longer the fatigue life of hole. An approximate quadratic curve has been found to suit the relationship between the tolerances of roundness and their logarithmic fatigue lives with given survivability.
