Abstract

The effects of accelerated rotation waveforms, such as trapezoidal, sinusoidal, triangular and rectangular, on Ekman flow pattern in process of accelerated crucible rotation techniques (ACRT) were studied with hydraulic analogue experiments. It is found that to gain stable and effective Ekman flow, trapezoidal waveform is better than the other in accelerated rotation mode. The effects of acceleration and duration of constant rate of rotation on Ekman flow were further investigated. It has been shown that optimum rate of rotation is between 0.17 and 1.0 r/s2, and duration is more than 12 s.
