Abstract

The indentation experiment with flat cylindrical indenters on thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems was simulated. The method of determining the elastic modulus of thermal barrier (TB) and bond coating (BC)-layers of TBC systems were emphatically investigated. The numerical results show that the parameter k, the ratio of the indentation depth to the applied stress, is related to both the elastic modulus of the TB and BC-layers and the size of the indenter. Simultaneous determination for both TB and BC layers modulus can be carried out with two indenters of different sizes.
