Abstract

The Merrifield-Simmons index is one of the popular and valuable topological indices in chemistry molecular graph theory. In order to calculate the Merrifield-Simmons index of polyphenyl chains fast and convenient, the formulae of the Merrifield-Simmons indices of three special polyphenyl chains Z _n,S_n and L_n were obtained by using recurrence method. After some matrix operation,the more general formuale on the Merrifield-Simmons index of the three polyphenyl chains are given.
