Abstract

Expressions in terms of characteristic modes (CMs) for evaluating metallic antenna resonance, radiation efficiency, actual directivity, maximum possible directivity, and quality factor are proposed. They are validated by comparing with the full-wave simulation results of unidirectional electrically small antennas. As a complement to the lack of dielectric material in the CM evaluations, a practical fabricated antenna is studied.
