Change of Particle Boundaries in HIP Processed Ti-5Al-2. 5Sn Powders

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The change of the particle boundary in Ti-5Al-2. 5Sn powders made by the plasma rolation electrode process (PREP) during hot isostatic pressing (HIP) has been studied. It was shown that the primary particle boundaries experience a complicated variation from deformation, breakdown to aggregation, etc. during HIPing. This is due to composition segregation, oxidation and enrichment of impurities which decrease the interface binding force of the powder particles. Interfacial binding force of the powder particles can be improved by increasing the temperature and time of HIP.
