Abstract
The antiwear properties of potassium borate as an oil additive and the effects of hydration water of potassium borate on performance have been studied using a Four-ball Machine. AES and XPS were used to study the wear scars. It is shown that potassium borate has a good antiwear function due to the formation of a film containing boron, potassium, oxygen, carbon and iron. The existing form of boron on wear scars is potassium borate which can be dissolved in water.
