Abstract
The ray casting method[1, 6, 7] is widely in use but, in our opinion, it does not always succeed in reaching a proper inside/outside determination. We now propose improving it so that the inside/outside determination is always proper. Subsection 2.2 of the full paper discusses with the help of Figs. 4 through 7 the circumstances under which the ray casting method fails to reach the proper inside/outside determination during the generation of Cartesian meshes. Subsection 2.3 discusses, again with the help of Figs.4 through 7, how to improve the ray casting method. The core of the improvement is to find the proper inside/outside determination by ensuring the odd or even number of times of intersection whatever is necessary. Section 3 presents two application examples to compare the inside/outside determination results obtained by the two ray casting methods, one before and the other after improvement. The comparison of the second application example, given in Figs.13 and 14, shows preliminarily that our improved ray casting method can resolve the failures caused by the ray casting method before improvement, thus reaching the proper inside/outside determination.
