Abstract
A wideband and low-profile magneto-electric (ME) dipole antenna loaded with a metasurface is proposed. Firstly, broadband operation is achieved by combining the resonances of the ME dipole and the metasurface. Then, to address the issue of gain degradation at high frequency, I-shaped slots are introduced on the electric dipole to adjust the current distribution for suppressing the undesired common-mode resonance. The antenna is fabricated by two substrates with a low-profile of only 0.063 λcenter (λcenter denotes the wavelength at the center frequency). Both simulation and measurement results confirm that the proposed antenna operates over a frequency range of 10.65 GHz to 16.45 GHz, achieving a bandwidth of 42.8% and a peak gain of 8.7 dBi, covering the majority of X/Ku band. These features make the proposed antenna attractive for conformal antenna and array antenna designs in satellite communication system.
