Abstract

Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are very promising and attractive in medium/high-voltage applications. This paper proposes a unified startup strategy for MMCs from either ac-side or dc-side based on a deadbeat predictive current control. With the developed control strategy, charging currents from both sides can be simultaneously regulated in a closed-loop manner with an excellent dynamic performance. Therefore, all the SM capacitors can be fast charged to the rated voltage value, guaranteeing a rapid and safety startup of MMCs. Moreover, conventional separated and complex controller design and parameter tuning are not necessary, which greatly reduces algorithm calculation burdens and structure complexities. Detailed development processes and design considerations of the proposed startup strategy are introduced and analyzed. The effectiveness and performance of the developed algorithm are verified by experiments.
