A Study of the Roller Profile Modification Design of a Cylindrical Roller Bearing with a Titling Angle of Roller

Abstract

The roller stress distribution in the cylindrical roller bearing can be changed by the rollers with a tilting angle, which can also affect the bearing life. Many current studies focused on the roller profile modification design, contact area, contact deformation, and stress distribution for the rollers without the titling angle. When the rollers with the titling angle, few studies focused on the roller stress distribution for the roller with different profile modification cases and titling resistance capacity. To overcome this question, a non-ideal Hertzian contact model between the roller and raceway is presented by using the non-ideal Hertzian contact theory. The effects of the fully crowned profile, partially crowned profile with one curvature center, partially crowned profile with two curvature centers, and logarithmic profile on the stress distribution between roller and raceway and titling resistance capacity of different profile modification cases are studied. The results show that the roller stress distribution for different profile modification cases are asymmetrical when the roller is titling; The stress value of roller end increases with the titling angle; Compared to the roller without a titling angle, the increment of maximum contact stress value of the fully crowned profile is smallest in the four different profile modification cases; the increment of maximum contact stress value of the logarithmic profile is largest in the four different profile modification cases; the fully crowned profile has a higher titling resistance capacity; the logarithmic profile has a lower titling resistance capacity.
