Abstract
Vanadate glasses with high optical transmission characteristics were realized for application in optical fibers. Vanadate glasses are practically transparent in the visible light range. When doped with neodymium, the vanadate glasses demonstrate quite encouraging laser properties. Their stimulated-emission cross-section was found to be larger than any other known laser glasses. They were also found to have a considerably low phonon energy, implying a high quantum efficiency.
