Abstract
Thin-ply composites show more obvious in-situ effect, which results in more complicated deformation and failure mechanisms, as well as variations in damage and failure behaviors. Focused on the impact behavior of thin-ply composites, this paper reviews the research advances on the impact failure mechanism, intralaminar fracture behavior and computational modeling methods of thin-ply composites. The effect of ply thickness on the impact damage behavior of thin-ply composites and the critical points for impact simulation are summarized and discussed. The key problems and major research directions for future studies in impact failure analysis of thin-ply composites are also discussed.
