Abstract

The state of art and possible future development of the combustion instability in the solid rocket motor are discussed. Several fundamental problems in theoretical, numerical and experimental studies should be taken care of for a deep insight of the combustion instability phenomenon in solid rocket motors, a reliable prediction method and an effective controlling technique, including the physical mechanism of the combustion instability, the instability evaluation method, the characteristics of the excitation and damping factors in the motors, the mechanisms of the triggering and the birth of limit cycle in the growing oscillation, and the controlling technique of the instability, as well as its ground test with the equivalency relation between the ground and flight tests. At last, the conclusions and suggestions are given, emphasising the directions and objectives for the study of the combustion instability in solid rocket motors.
