Abstract

The aerodynamic impact of ice accretion is one of the most important research contents in aircraft icing problems. However, to the authors' knowledge, related studies on the effect of ice roughness on airfoil aerodynamic characteristics are still quite rare. Therefore, the present paper proposes an ice roughness superposition method based on ice roughness parameters (surface roughness height and surface roughness dispersion). The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the finite volume method with the S-A turbulence model. The influence of ice accretion with different ice roughness parameters on airfoil aerodynamic characteristics, especially on the airfoil stall characteristics, is analyzed for both rime ice and glaze ice, which will hopefully provides some enlightenment for aircraft icing problems. Results show that, the roughness parameters of the rime ice will result in a significant effect on airfoil stall performance. However, for a glaze iced airfoil, the two horn-like protrusions are the main factors causing the aerodynamic loss, while the effect of ice roughness parameters is negligible.
